Eyelid Surgery- Blepheroplasty
As part of the natural aging process, certain genetic traits and the effects of environmental damage from the Houston’s harmful sunrays can accelerate the aging around the eyes. Our skin begins to form lines and wrinkles and our eyelids begin to droop resulting in a tired, more restless appearance. Often times, even after a great night’s sleep, it can be hard to feel alive and vibrant when your eyes droop and you look tired. The loose skin over your eyes and the fat deposits under create dark circles, making you look tired and older than you feel inside.
Fortunately Dr. Nikko, experienced Cosmetic Surgeon in Houston, can conduct the eyelid surgery procedure to help you reverse the signs of aging. Each year thousands of men and women choose eyelid surgery to help restore a more energetic and youthful appearance.
Eyelid surgery, also known as Blepharoplasty, can correct sagging eyelids by gently removing fatty deposits beneath the eyes and excess skin from the upper eyelids. Eyelid surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with other facial surgery procedures, such as a facelift or a brow lift.
What can I expect from my eyelid surgery consultation with Dr. Nikko?
Recognized among plastic surgeons in Texas, Dr. Nikko will examine your eyelids during a consultation to determine the extent of your condition. He will check to see if your vision is being impaired by the excess fat deposits on the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Nikko will explain your options, your expectations and the probable outcome of your procedure. You will be shown several before and after photographs of patients with similar eyelid concerns. With your consent, before and after photos may be taken of your eyes to document your results.
What does an eyelid surgery – Blepharoplasty procedure involve?
Eyelid surgery or Blepharoplasty is generally performed under local anesthesia, but can be performed under general anesthesia as well. Dr. Nikko places fine incisions in the crease above each eye to correct fat deposits that have accumulated on the upper eyelids. Dr. Nikko will remove a thin crescent of excess skin and muscle just above the eye. The incisions are closed with very fine sutures. To remove the fatty deposits beneath the eyes incisions are placed just inside the lower eyelid. After the fat is removed, the incisions may be closed with absorbable sutures or may be left to heal naturally. When excess skin and muscle need to be removed from the lower lids, the incisions are placed in the natural smile crease. The procedure can last one to two hours, depending on the extent of the surgery.
What is the recovery process for eyelid surgery?
When the procedure is performed alone (not with a facelift), it is generally done under local anesthesia. The eye area is generally bruised and swollen for about two weeks. Patients should keep their head up and place cold compresses on their eyes periodically. Antibiotic eye drops may be prescribed for several days by Dr. Nikko. Patients will not be able to wear contact lenses for about two weeks, since the eyelids may be stiff and sensitive. Make-up can be applied after a few days when the sutures have been removed and Dr. Nikko has reviewed the area. The resulting hairline scars which follow the natural contour of the eyelids tend to fade in about two months. After cosmetic surgery, patients have a softer, more youthful look to their faces. The tired, sleepy, aged appearance is replaced with a fresher, softer and more natural look.
