What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a Cosmetic Surgery Procedure used to actually remove unwanted localized deposits of fat cells from underneath the skin. Liposuction is designed to reshape the body to a more natural contour and definition. A suction tube – know as a cannula – is inserted through a tiny incision in the natural creases of the body to extract the fat cells by vacuum. Dr. Nikko can quickly and safely remove the stubborn fat cells leaving an overall balanced body contour. What is the tumescent technique?

The Tumescent Liposuction technique combines large volumes of saline solution, local anesthesia and adrenaline that are infused into the fatty area being treated. The tumescent solution causes swelling and suspends the fat cells in the solution. Once fat cells have been suspended, Dr. Nikko then inserts a small tube (cannula) under the superficial layer of the skin which is connected to a vacuum machine. The cannula is inserted into the fatty tissue through tiny incisions hidden in the natural creases of the body to prevent any visible scaring. Once the cannula has been properly inserted, as a skin expert and Board Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Nikko gently moves it around under the skin and suctions away unwanted fat cells.

How do I know if I am a candidate for Liposuction?

Anyone can benefit from Liposuction, from athletes to sedentary individuals, from women to men, from young people to adults. Unfortunately, not all fat cells respond to diet and exercise. Furthermore, lifestyle choices, genetics, age and environmental changes all contribute to the accumulation of unwanted fat deposits in the body. Anyone in good health with realistic expectations is a good candidate for Liposuction. If you exercise and still have trouble achieving that well-proportioned body contour, Liposuction with Houston’s renowned Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Nikko is a great option for you.

What areas on the body respond best to Liposuction?

All areas of the body with stubborn fat deposits generally respond great to Tumescent Liposuction. However, almost any targeted area of the body will respond well to Liposuction when used as an overall body contouring procedure. The most popular areas for women include inner and outer thighs, waist, hips, lower back, mid back (bra line), buttocks, abdomen, knees, lower legs, cheeks, neck, and arms. Facial Liposuction is also recommended for double chin and jaw line. Liposuction options for men include the breast (reduction), abdomen (tummy and love handles), pubic area, face and neck, among other less common areas.

How much weight can I expect to lose from a Liposuction procedure?

Although Liposuction is not a considered a weight loss procedure, it is considered a great option to loose inches. While it is true that removing large amounts of fat deposits in problem areas of the body will result in weight loss, the overall goal of a Liposuction procedure in Houston is to redefine and contour the body resulting in an overall balanced body proportion. Dr. Nikko discusses with all patients their Cosmetic Surgery and Liposuction options and the realistic goals. Many patients report improved self-esteem and confidence as a benefit of Liposuction. I understand that with Liposuction fat cells are removed. Are the results permanent?

Everyone is born with a certain amount of fat cells in the body that after puberty stop recreating. Once these fat cells have been removed from the body they will not return. The results are permanent only if you constantly work at it. All patients that undergo Liposuction body contour treatments must commit to certain lifestyle changes associated with diet and exercise. And even though the removed fat cells cannot return in the area treated, they will begin to appear in other areas of the body if a healthy lifestyle is not conducted.

Will I need a second procedure?

Most patients are thrilled with the dramatic results that a Liposuction Procedure provides which is why it is one of the most requested Cosmetic Surgery Procedures. Patients that use Liposuction as a way to “jump-start” a fitness program usually continue to refine and reshape their body and often times look to additional Liposuction procedures to fine tune certain areas of the body resistant to diet and exercise.

Can Liposuction get rid of cellulite?

Liposuction is not a treatment for cellulite. Currently there is no proven method to decrease or remove the presence of cellulite. Liposuction, however, can help to improve the appearance of cellulite after fat cells have been removed.

What improvements to my skin and existing skin conditions can I expect?

While Liposuction will give you a dramatic improvement in your overall body contour, it will not correct or eliminate existing dimples, ripples or stretch marks you may have had prior to surgery. The use of smaller cannulas permits the fibrous connections between your skin and body to remain, therefore avoiding any mayor or visible scars. As a result, excessive skin folds are so rare that many patients avoid the necessity for surgical skin excision by having excellent results with liposuction alone.

What is the recovery process for Liposuction?

Recovery from Liposuction depends on the number of procedures and problem areas being treated. You can generally expect to recover in the privacy of your own home and within a few days you should be able to resume normal activities. Everyone tolerates pain at different levels; paying attention to your body’s response to pain is one of the best ways to ensure a fast and safe recovery. Dr. Nikko provides a compression or snug fitting garment to wear over the treated areas to facilitate the healing process. At Nikko Cosmetic Surgery Center we are always available for any specialized care or pain medication to make your recovery as comfortable as possible.
