general questions

Cosmetic surgery is the reshaping of normal structures on the body to improve the self-esteem or appearance of a patient. Such improvement is achieved through cosmetic (aesthetic) procedures.

As with all surgical procedures, cosmetic surgery carries with it certain risks. That is why it is important to select a doctor who is well-trained and experienced in performing the specific procedure you want. During your consultation, you will get the opportunity to further learn about possible side effects, risks, and complications of the surgery you want in greater detail. You will meet with cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nikko to discuss what goals you hope to accomplish with cosmetic surgery and whether these goals are realistic.

The ideal candidate for cosmetic surgery is an individual who recognizes a specific area in which his or her appearance could be improved and has a strong personal desire to make a change. Improving a feature of the face or body may give you greater self-confidence and add to your sense of well-being. However, it is very important to have realistic expectations when deciding to have a cosmetic surgery.

Dr. Anthony Nikko will be the doctor you'll meet during your initial consultation. He will also be the same surgeon who will perform your surgery, look after you and provide all of your post-operative care, including emergency care if required.

Your face is the one area you cannot hide the effects of aging. You may feel perfectly rested and content only to have people tell you that you look tired or worried. This can be the result of deep furrows or sagging eyebrows, not only producing a look that does not fit how you feel, but also making you look tired, old, sad or angry. Whether to reclaim a more youthful appearance or look as good as you feel, forehead surgery or a browlift permits you to have safe and dramatic results.

Several variations of the procedure exist and Dr. Nikko will decide which technique is best for you depending on your features and the desired result.

- The bicoronal technique performed by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr.Nikko consists of creating a single incision from ear to ear across the top of your head. With this technique, the surgeon will remove excess skin, and therefore elevate your eyebrows to a more youthful position. Since the incision is in the hairline, it is hidden when healed.

- The endoscopic browlift procedure performed by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nikko consists of placing a series of 2-4 small incisions in the scalp behind the hairline. Inserted into these incisions is an endoscope, a thin, elongated tube with a light and attached to a camera. This special instrument allows your surgeon to modify the muscles and achieve the proper brow position, maintained by suture fixation. No scalp skin is excised.

It is not unusual to combine a forehead or browlift procedure with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a facelift or eyelid surgery to complete a consistent picture renewal.

When we look in the mirror, we often tend to focus on our imperfections. Many people feel their faces are out of balance and wish to have changes made to achieve facial balance or facial harmony. Facial reshaping of the bony contours, performed by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nikko, allows you to enhance or reduce areas of your face with surgeries providing safe and dramatic results that can address your concerns about facial harmony. The surgeries discussed here are often done in combination with other procedures such as eyelid surgery or facelift. If you feel your facial features are understated or not proportionate, then the following facial-reshaping procedures may be what you need to restore confidence in your appearance.

- Chin augmentation is accomplished through an incision made either inside the mouth at the base of the lower gum, or just under the chin in an already present skin fold. The cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Nikko, can alter the chin by either attaching a specifically selected implant or by altering and repositioning the bone, thereby increasing the projection.

- Cheek augmentation is performed through incisions made either inside the mouth, on the lower eyelid, or possibly in front of the ear. The implant is inserted and attached to the already present cheekbone, thereby increasing the projection.

- Jaw enhancement is achieved by placing implants through incisions inside the mouth on either side of the lower lip.

Shrinkage of facial muscles is one of the primary manifestations of the aging process. Aging combined with diet and exercise can cause many people to develop a thinner face. In some cases a dramatic skeltonization may occur. For these patients a lifting procedure alone may produce a masked look. Restoring the volume of the atrophied muscles is an obvious method of facial rejuvenation. Augmenting the volume of the muscles in the forehead, cheeks, mouth, chin and jawline with fat restores the more youthful look of a fuller face.

FAMI stands for Fat Autografting Muscle Injections. It is a non-surgical approach to aesthetic surgery that facilitates the correction of facial deficiencies. FAMI is an outpatient procedure in which Dr. Nikko removes fat tissues from the lower part of your body with liposuction and then refines this fat tissue by centrifugation and injects it into your facial muscles with the use of specially made instruments.

The Facelift procedure is technically known as Rhytidectomy. The procedure consists of separating the facial skin from the underlying fat and muscles, eliminating excess fat to contour, tightening facial and neck muscles, pulling the skin back and removing the excess. The result is a lifted facial structure and smoother, tighter skin. In general the incisions are placed within the hairline starting at the temple, running along the natural skin fold in front of the ear, continuing around the bottom of the lobe, behind the ear and into the hairline. All incisions are strategically placed to be invisible or nearly invisible upon healing. A facelift performed by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nikko will not remove forehead lines, bags under your eyes, or crows feet. It also will not correct the excess skin and wrinkling of the neck. These areas can be treated at the same time as your facelift with a browlift, eyelid surgery or a neck lift. During your personal consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your face and clarify the details of the surgical techniques chosen for you.

Chemical peels performed by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Nikko are topically applied acids that aid in the restoration and rejuvenation of the skins surface. They create an even and controlled shedding of several layers of the skin. Depending on the type and depth of the peel, few or many layers can be shed allowing new layers to be exposed and creating a fresh new appearance.

Chemical peels treatments at Houston Cosmetic Surgery Center are classified as superficial, medium, and deep peels.

- Superficial Peel is designed to help smooth rough, dry skin, improve the texture of sun-damaged skin, and even out skin tone. The recovery is generally rapid and usually consists of minor flaking. A series of treatments is generally recommended to obtain the desired result over a period of time. Typically, there is no down time and with appropriate sun protection, you can resume regular activities immediately.

- Medium Peels often contain higher levels or stronger acids. The best candidate for a medium peel is an individual with fair skin. Medium peels target the epidermis and upper dermis and cause the skin to slough within 5 to 7 days. Immediately after treatment the skin has a red appearance and is occasionally accompanied by swelling. Within a day, the skin turns brown in color and after 3 or 4 days, the skin begins the peeling process.

- Deep Peels produce the most dramatic results. This peel is recommended for treating wrinkles, scars, blemishes and, in some cases, precancerous skin lesions. A deep peel targets the dermis. In some cases, anesthesia is required during the procedure to reduce the warm to hot stinging sensation. After a deep peel, the skin is red and can result in some swelling and blistering. A crust may form and the skin will turn brown just prior to peeling. Many layers of the skin will peel over a period of one to two weeks. An ointment may be given to keep the area moist. Temporarily, the new skin will have the color and sensation of significant sunburn, which will gradually fade to your normal skin color
